It’s an annual tradition for members of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 331 to connect with other veterans and the community over food and fireworks.
Every second Saturday in August, the group puts on the China Beach Veterans Reunion at the GasLite Bar and Grill picnic and campgrounds area in the town of Trimbelle.
The family style get together this year will take place Aug. 12 starting at 11 a.m. with food being served at 1 p.m.
It will be a potluck, so bring a dish to share. After the food, a flag retirement ceremony will occur followed by fireworks. Carry ons are not allowed at the site.
A Huey helicopter will be on scene, weather permitting, starting at 11 a.m.
Ever since Chapter 331’s inception, this event has been taking place, according to member Billy Baker. Baker said this is at least 15 years to his knowledge, which is when he joined the group.
About 10-15 active members of St. Croix Valley Chapter 331 VVA meet every second Saturday of the month. Recently they worked together to put the event on, with everyone contributing to its success.
Donations will be collected at the event, with the group’s intention to give back to the community. Every year, a scholarship is put together for a graduating senior in the area. The students have to either be a “legal relative of a Vietnam era veteran or be sponsored by a Vietnam era veteran” to apply. The winner is announced in May.
